Peace Darkens, pt. 1

Events of ZungAlexia history recorded on this page and other pages document the darkening of the “Pax Zungzamia Imperia”, after more than 12 centuries of truely peaceful and prosperous times for the Imperium and its people.

1243 IA (1450 CE)

Georgius VI dies after ruling the Imperium for 82 years. As the only surviving son, Cornelius Paulus Zungzamius ascends to the Imperial Throne at the age of 68 as Cornelius V, the 17th Imperator of Zungzamia however; he does not leave the Zel’Koni Order or his role as a Zel’Koni Sentinel.

Individual members of the Imperial Senate become concerned that with a member of the Order as the Imperator the Zel’Koni Order has too much influence over the Imperium. Also, members of the Order become concerned that the new Imperator will not be able to rule effectively if he is unable to reconcile political realities with the teachings of the Order. The concerned members of both institutions voice their concerns to the Imperator who listens yet, dismisses those same concerns.

Late in the year, Imperial Senate confer with the Order’s Grand Assembly. The Grand Assembly agrees with the Senators that legislation must be enacted to resolve the issues involving the Imperator.

1244 IA (1451 CE)

20 Ianuarum – Imperial Senators introduce Imperial Senate Bill (ISB) 1244-72, “The Family-Order Act”. The proposed legislation states that it is inappropriate for a member of the Sacred Order of Zel’Koni to serve the Imperium as Imperator and stipulates that one of three events must take place within thirty days of passage:

The Imperator voluntarily relinquishes the Imperial throne to a male member of the Imperial Family who is not attuned to the Koni, the Grand Assembly of the Order forces the “retirement” of the current Imperator from the Zel’Koni Order decreeing that the member of the Order currently serving as Imperator is “retired” from the Order however is allowed to retain his masabe, or the Imperator voluntarily resigns from the Zel’Koni Order.

The law further stipulates that any current or future member of the Imperial Family who is in the line of succession and attuned to the Koni may be trained in the ways of the Zel’Koni Order at the Grand Hall in Nivo. Upon successfully completing the Sentinel Ordeals, the family member/student-sentinel will be given a choice: stay with the Order, have the title “Sentinel of the Order” bestowed upon them and renounce all Imperial titles and claims to the Imperial throne or surrender their masabe and return to the Zila Mãja as a “retired” member of the Order. Since there is no permanent committee to initially address and debate the proposed legislation’s contents and merits, the Senate votes to debate the bill on the Senate floor, which begins three days later and lasts for an extraordinary 58 Senate working days.

1 Tetribrium – The Imperial Senate passes ISB 1244-72. Once finalized the bill is sent to Imperator Cornelius V who disapproves of the bill, sending it back to the Senate with his written objections three days later.

22 Tetribrium – The Imperial Senate overrides the Imperial Disapproval with 75% approval. ISB 1244-72 becomes Imperial Law 1244-72 when the seal of the Imperial Senate is applied and all of the senators who voted in favor of override have signed the document, taking effect in nine (9) days.

1 Pentibrium – The day Imperial Law 1244-72, “The Family-Order Act”, takes effect. A signed, written statement from the Imperator to the Imperial Senate and the Grand Assembly acknowledges the existence of Imperial Law 1244-72 however will not abide by any of the provisions of the law.

5 Pentibrium – The Grand Assembly of the Zel’Koni Order issues a decree that effective on the first day of Senabrium in Imperial year 1244 and in accordance with Imperial Law 1244-72, Cornelius Paulus Zungzamius, Sentinel of the Order, known as Cornelius V, Imperator of Zungzamia, is retired from the Sacred Order of Zel’Koni for the rest of his natural life being granted the privilege of retaining his masabe. Official copies of the decree are created, signed by each member of the Grand Assembly and the Seal of the Order is applied to each copy by the Secretary of the Assembly.

6 Pentibrium – During the mid-morning hours, the official copies of the decree are hand-delivered by the Grand Maven of the Assembly to the Speaker of the Imperial Senate, In full view of the other Senators, the Speaker of the Senate signs and applies the Seal of the Imperial Senate to the copies acknowledging the existence of the decree and that it is in accordance with “The Family-Order Act”. At High Sun, the copies of the decree are delivered by the Grand Maven of the Assembly and the Speaker of the Senate to the Imperator, who refuses to sign or even acknowledge the existence of the decree. The Speaker points out that it didn’t matter whether the Imperator signed the copies or not, the Imperial Law and the Order Decree are valid and enforce, copies were simply being delivered for the Imperial Archives.

Crown Prince Georgius Nikolaus Zungzamius ascends the throne and is crowned Nikolaus VII, the 18th Imperator of Zungzamia. Over the next five years, Nikolaus VII attempts to get legislation passed revoking numerous Imperial Laws regulating financial institutions and markets. Most of these attempts fail in the Imperial Senate.

1390 IA

The Defenders of the Throne adopt black uniforms and armor. Imperial Senators opposed to the Imperator's economic and financial reforms begin to disappear.

Even as the Imperator’s continuous attempts to revoke Imperial financial regulation laws fail in either Imperial Senate committees or in the full Senate, Nikolaus VII begins to devise a plan to usurp the Imperial Senate through legislation.

1392 IA

The Imperator ends his attempts to revoke Imperial financial laws while loyal Senators begin to introduce legislation that, unknown to them, begins to implement Nikolaus VII’s plan to usurp the Senate.

1395 IA (1602 CE)

Senators loyal to Imperator Nikolaus VII introduce and push through a large piece of legislation designated ISB 1395-9066. The legislation’s numerous articles revoke large portions of more than 1,500 Imperial Laws established in the previous three years and consolidates remains of those laws into one lengthy piece of legislation. Furthermore, written within 9066 are unusual, yet legal, clauses requiring that the legislation must have a four-fifths majority for passage and that all of the Senators who voted in favor of the bill must sign the legislation by Imperial province along with the Speaker of the Senate.

28 Trebrium – ISB 1395-9066 receives the required four-fifths majority for passage by one vote in the Senate. The senators who voted in favor of the legislation sign it as required by the bill’s provisions.

4 Tetribrium – The Imperator signs ISB 1395-9066 into law becoming Imperial Law 1395-9066 and taking effect in sixty days.

31 Pentibrium – The Imperial Senate officially recesses for the summer.

4 Septimbrium – Imperial Law 1395-9066 comes into force. As the law becomes operative, several sections are automatically stricken.

5 Septimbrium – A clause within the “Implementation” section of Imperial Law 1395-9066 transforms the law’s title to the Imperial Prime Laws of Zungzamia (aka ‘The Prime Laws’ or ‘The IPLs’) and rescinds the law’s designation number of 1395-9066. Several provisions of the law are rescinded as others are altered. The remaining articles and sections of the altered document detail the remodeling of the Imperium’s form of government from a constitutional monarchy to an absolute one. It gives all executive and legislative authority to the Imperator or to any persons the Imperator sees fit to exercise such power. It permanently dissolves the Imperial Senate and the Imperial Provincial Councils. Also, this new constitution allows the Imperial judicial system to function semi-independently under an Oath of Loyalty to the Imperator. Furthermore, this modern instrument of government permanently bans the Zel’Koni Order from the City of Nivo and Zungzamia 120 days after “ratification”. The alterations of former Imperial Law 1395-9066 “ratify” the new charter and it immediately comes into force. Initially, its’ existence is unknown to the general populace and majority of the now-dissolved Imperial Senate.

15 Septimbrium – A minority of the Magistrates of the Imperial Supreme Court swear their ‘Oath of Loyalty’, as described in the new constitution, before Imperator Nikolaus VII. Those who refuse to take the oath disappear. On the same day, the Defenders of the Throne are renamed by the Imperator as “The Imperial Black Guard”. The new IBG is seen publicly for the first time alongside Nikolaus VII.

1 Novimbrium – Along with an official copy of the new constitution, the Imperator sends official notice to the Zel’Koni Order that they must permanently vacate Nivo and the planet by 4 Decimbrium or suffer dire consequences for violating the new constitution. The Zel’Koni attempts to gain an audience with the Imperator but is refused.

Imperial Senators return to Omirilaco to begin the new legislative session but are blocked from entering the Capitol building or their offices by Imperial Army troops. The Imperial Prime Laws of Zungzamia are officially published and distributed to the public. Also, by this date, a majority of judicial officers throughout the Imperium have sworn loyalty to the Imperator.

After reading the new constitution and over the next few months, several Imperial Senators attempt to gain an audience with the Imperator but are refused. Other Senators begin to challenge the Imperator’s authority through the Imperial judicial system, beginning to file complaints in mid-Decimbrium.

3 Decimbrium – The Grand Assembly of the Zel’Koni Order decides to stay at the Grand Hall; believing that the Imperator will do no harm to the Order. The Assembly notifies the other members that any who wish to depart to the Outpost on Alexandrus or leave the Order are free to do so. No members leave the Order but 30 leave for the Outpost.

5 Decimbrium – Grand Hall Massacre: At midnight, two Imperial Army brigades surround the city of Nivo while Army Special Forces troops (ASFs) alongside a small number of Imperial Black Guards (IBGs) surround and enter the Zel’Koni Grand Hall with orders to capture the Maven of the Grand Assembly and the Grand Maven of the Order and to shoot on sight all other members of the Zel’Koni. Once in the Grand Hall the ASFs open fire on Order members, while the IBGs use their masabes to assault them. Initially stunned by the assault, members of the Order defend themselves. As the ASFs and IBGs battle the Order in the Hall regular Army units search the city for any Zel’Koni members.

6 Decimbrium – As the sun rises the last of the Zel’Koni in the Grand Hall falls victim to the Imperial Army, as the IBGs capture the Maven of the Grand Assembly. The senior IBG informs the Imperator of the successful capture of the Hall and the Assembly’s Maven. Imperator Nikolaus VII travels to Nivo and enters the Grand Hall. Donning IBG armor, the Imperator duels with the Assembly’s Maven in masabe combat and use of the Koni. Ultimately the Imperator ends the life of the Maven. Upon his victory, he contacts the Order on Alexandrus informing the membership there of the fate of those in Nivo. Nikolaus VII also informs the Order that he is claiming the Grand Hall as property of the Imperium and that the fallen will be buried instead of cremated as is Zel’Koni custom to disgrace the dead and insult the Order for their part in the insult to the Imperial Family in the form of The Family-Order Act of 1244 IA.

7 Decimbrium – In the Zel’Koni Order’s Outpost on Alexandrus the members elect ten new members to the Grand Assembly to succeed those that were lost at the Grand Hall. The Imperator officially renames the Grand Hall the Imperial Nivo Garrison. Later in the evening at the Imperatora Zila Palee, the Imperator addresses his subjects informing them of the actions that took place and that if a member of the Order is seen on the surface of the father-world they are to be captured for interrogation.

1396 IA

The number of former Senators filing suit against the Imperator over the new Imperial Prime Laws increases.

1397 IA

Having evaded the Imperium for the last five years, the remaining members of the Zel’Koni Order on the father-world leave the planet and head to the Alexandrian outpost. Legal challenges to the new Imperial Prime Laws continue through the Imperial judicial system.

1399 IA

1 Pentibrium – Nikolaus Vincent Zungzamius, future Imperator Vincent, is born.
