In December 1979 Paramount Pictures, the production studio of the Star Trek franchise since late 1967; released the first Star Trek feature film, Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Since that time, Paramount has released an additional tweleve films in the franchise. The first six films featured the cast of The Original Series. The musical scores of these first six would be composed by four composers: Jerry Goldsmith (Star Trek 1 & 5), James Horner (Star Trek 2 & 3), Leonard Rosenman (Star Trek 4), and Cliff Eidelman (Star Trek 6).
The seventh film produced was a transistion featuring some of The Original Series cast and the entire cast from The Next Generation (TNG). Its' score was composed by veteran TNG composer Dennis McCarthy. The scores or the eighth, nineth and tenth films which focused solely on the cast of TNG, were composed by Jerry Goldsmith with the eighth film being co-composed with his son, Joel Goldsmith.
Six and half years after the last TNG film; Star Trek: Nemesis, the eleventh movie in the Star Trek film franchise was released in theaters in May 2009. Simply titled STAR TREK, the film not only re-booted the Star Trek film franchise, but breathed new life into the overall franchise. The musical score for STAR TREK was composed by a newcomer to the franchise, Michael Giacchino, who would also compose the scores to the 2009 film's two sequels, Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond.
