The twelfth film in the franchise, Star Trek Into Darkness was released in theaters on 16 May 2013. Its musical score would be composed and conducted by returning composer Michael Giacchino. In the four years intervening between STAR TREK and Into Darkness, Mr. Giacchino would compose the musical scores of ten films including: Up (2009), which he won an Academy Award; Super 8 (2011) and Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol (2011). He would also score music for two television series during this timeframe. This film score is unique amongst the Star Trek films because its 'Main Theme' does not come until the end of the film.
