As production of the second, live-action Star Trek television series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, was coming to an end, the series' producers chose, with permission from Paramount Pictures, to write and produce the seventh film in the franchise. The score of this seventh film, released in theaters as Star Trek: Generations on 28 November 1994, was composed and conducted by Dennis McCarthy. Prior to scoring this film's music, Mr. McCarthy did not have an extensive film composition portfolio but a vast television one. Prior and during his work on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Mr. McCarthy would compose music for 20 different television series, including Star Trek: Deep Space Nine; the third, live-action Star Trek TV series, and 20 television movies dating back to 1974.
Following his work on Generations, Mr. McCarthy would continue to compose music for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine until the series ended in 1999. He would continue his association with the Star Trek franchise by composing music for various episodes of the fourth and fifth live-action Star Trek series, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise. While working on Star Trek, Mr. McCarthy continued to compose music for television films & series episodes and short films and at least one feature film; McHale's Navy (1997). To this day, Mr. McCarthy continues to compose music for short flims, a small number of television series and retrospective films on two of Star Trek's series; Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager.
