Summarized History
Like the Explorer-class twenty years earlier, the Alexandrus-class began as part of the Union of Federal Alexandrian Republic's “Project Explorer” in 343 EoD. Following the launch of the Explorer in 370 EoD, “Project Explorer” personnel began to work on improving the Warp 3 engine they developed. Over the next 12 years, those developments created the Warp 4 engine. As the “Project Explorer” continued to work on the Warp 4 engine, Starfleet's ship design bureau designed the Warp 4 prototype based on the Explorer-class during the early 380's EoD, finalizing the design in 385 EoD and beginning construction two years later.
Bearing registry number ISV-50, the Warp 4 prototype survey cruiser was launched in late 388 EoD and commissioned as ARV Alexandrus in 390 EoD. Over the next 35 years, 25 more Alexandrus -class cruisers would be built and serve the Union Starfleet with distinction along side its' predecessors of the Explorer-class and its' successors of the Union-class. During its' 75 years of service, the ships of the class would expand the knowledge of the Union, and beginning in 450 EoD the United Republic of ZungAlexia (URZA), through its exploration of interstellar space.
More than 60 years into the service life of the Alexandrus-class in Year 2 of the Age of Unity (452 EoD), the new URZA government's Ministry of Exploration and Protection (MEP) established a new system of spacecraft identification & classification. All former Union Starfleet ships now in active service to the URZA would be given the new prefix of U.R.S. standing for United Republic Ship while each ship's registry code would be changed from ISV for InterStellar Vehicle to RSC for Republic Starfleet Craft. Ship identification beacons such as those on the Alexandrus-class were changed via subspace communication into the ships' computers while the hull markings were changed over time as each ship visited a ZungAlexian starbase or outpost.
In 15 UA (465 EoD) the Alexandrus-class survey cruiser URS Vircaro, bearing registry number RSC-75, was decommissioned after 40 years of service to first the Union then to the United Republic. The Vircaro's decommissioning marked the retirement of the Alexandrus-class after three-quarters of a century of exemplary active service in exploring the galaxy.
