The sixth live-action series in the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: Discovery, was developed by
Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, both veterans of Star Trek productions. The series premiered on the American television
network CBS on 24 September 2017 with the pilot episode, “The Vulcan Hello”. Simultaneously, the episode was released on
the network's Internet streaming service “CBS All Access”. The episode's release on “CBS All Access” made
Star Trek: Discovery the first Star Trek series to premiere on the Internet. Since the premiere, the rest of the series
“aired” only online, initially through “CBS All Access” then, after being officially rebranded on 4 March 2021,
on “Paramount+”.
The series musical composer, Primetime Emmy Award winning composer Jeff Russo, is new to the Star Trek
franchise however has been composing music for television and online series for over a decade. His credits, prior to working on
Discovery include the television series Necessary Roughness, Fargo (in which he was awarded a Primetime Emmy),
and American Gothic. Since the series ended in May 2024, the composer has continued his work on various TV shows and films,
including the online TV film Star Trek: Section 31 released on Paramount+ on 24 January 2025.
