The Excelsior-class began as an experimental propulsion project known as “The Transwarp Development Project” with the purpose of designing a vessel capable of exceeding normal warp velocities using a transwarp drive engine. The prototype vessel, bearing registry number NX-2000, was launched in 2284 and commissioned by Starfleet as USS Excelsior the very next year in 2285. Dubbed “The Great Experiment”, initial testing of Excelsior proved positive however as time went on, the prototype was not meeting expectations, much less exceeding them. After three years of testing, Starfleet concluded that The Transwarp Development Project—and its engine—was a failure; ending the project in 2288. Despite the failure of the transwarp engine and the project overall, Starfleet felt that the Excelsior's design was good enough to allow the ship to enter regular service. Following some moderate changes in design, Excelsior was retrofitted with standard warp drive and entered into regular active service bearing registry number NCC-2000 in 2290.
Three years later in late 2293, the third starship to bear the name Enterprise was commissioned, bearing registry number NCC-1701-B. This Enterprise was built as the first vessel of a new variant (or subclass) of the Excelsior-class. Enterprise-B and other Excelsior-class ships constructed in this variant design were equipped with additional impulse engines, modified warp nacelles, and extensions to the secondary hull which allowed for advance scanning technologies or additional cargo space.
Throughout the early half of 24th Century and despite more advanced starships being constructed; large numbers of Excelsior-class starships were built using the original and variant designs serving in a variety of capacities including combat roles during the many conflicts Starfleet found itself in, including the Dominion War which led to the loss of many Excelsior-class ships. Those ships that survived the conflict continued to serve in those various capacities well into the 2380's.

NOTES
USS Archer — First mentioned in the tenth film, Star Trek: Nemesis, Star Trek canon has not yet visually documented this vessel's ship class however, the Star Trek Encyclopedia (2016) identifies the ship as an Excelsior–class starship. Due to the “quasi-canonical” nature of the Encyclopedia, the InfoBarn accepts the information provided in that reference publication until such time that it is visually confirmed or refuted in a current or future Star Trek franchise production.
USS Excelsior — There is contradictory
information related to this ship. First seen in the franchise's third film, The Search for Spock,
bearing registry number NX-2000, this ship is visually seen and identified for the last time
in the sixth film, The Undiscovered Country, with a changed registry of NCC-2000.
In the Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) second season episode “The
Measure of a Man”, a computer display lists a USS Excelsior with the registry
number of NCC-21445 or NCC-27445. The list does not provide a ship class for the vessel
and the readablity of the list is highly questionable. Also, in the TNG seventh season episode
“Interface”, an Excelsior participates in the unsuccessful search and rescue
of USS Hera. This Excelsior is not visually identified, only mentioned in the episode.
The Star Trek Encyclopedia (2016) indicates that the ship mentioned in
“Interface” is the original NX/NCC-2000. However, the Star Trek wiki,
Memory Alpha, contradicts the Encyclopedia;
indicating that the Excelsior mentioned in the episode is a newer ship with the number
NCC-27445 was involved in
the search for the Hera.
Since there is no visual evidence of the existence an Excelsior with
a number of either NCC-21445 or NCC-27445, the InfoBarn only shows the original vessel
in the list of known Excelsior-class ships on this class profile and in the InfoBarn's
overall “complete” Starships List.
