Starships of the Ambassador-class entered Starfleet service in the late 2320's and early 2330's. This class became one of the first new Federation starship classes to have a computer network not based on duotronic technology since the 2240's. Along with a new computer system based on isolinear technology, the impulse engines of this class were designed with a space-time driver coil (similar to a warp field coil) to reduce the vessel's mass while traveling at sub-light speeds. Also, the warp propulsion system of the Ambassador-class was one of the most efficient systems in the Federation. The warp drive of this class and of other contemporary starship classes were so efficient that the Federation had to recalibrate the warp velocity scale that was used to determine warp factors, leading to a maximum velocity factor on the recalibrated scale of Warp Factor 10.
The fourth Federation starship to bear the name Enterprise was of the Ambassador-class. Bearing registry NCC-1701-C, the vessel was presumed destroyed with the loss of all hands while defending a Klingon outpost on Narendra III from a Romulan attack in 2344. The Klingon Empire viewed the actions and destruction of the Enterprise as honorable sacrifice which, ultimately, led to the formation of the Federation-Klingon Alliance. Despite this “honorable sacrifice”, rumors persisted for more than 20 years after the incident that there were survivors from the Enterprise-C.
Originally Ambassador-class ships were categorized as explorers however, in the 2350's during a time of conflict with the Cardassian Union known as the Border Wars, ships of this class received modifications and upgrades and were re-categorized as heavy cruisers. During the Dominion War of the 2370's, Ambassador-class starships served as part of a second line of defense for the Federation but saw little action.

NOTES
Adelphi, Ambassador, Exeter, Gandhi, Horatio, Valdemar — Certain aspects of these ships, such as registry numbers or even if they are a ship of the class at all, are not established in canon but are provided in quasi-canonical references, such as the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual for the Ambassador specifically, or the Star Trek Encyclopedia.
USS Zhukov — “Officially” the registry number for the Zhukov is NCC-62136 according to the Encyclopedia and Memory Alpha, however, Memory Beta indicates the 26136 number for the ship and this site's webmaster chooses to use the later number since it “fits better” amongst the registry numbers of the other ‘26’ Ambassador-class ships.
