By the 2160's a significant number of Daedalus-class ships were in service to the newly-formed United Federation of Planets and it's Starfleet; inheriting these ships from the United Earth Starfleet following its' war with the Romulan Star Empire which ended with a peace treaty in 2160. Prior to and during the war, shipyards in the Sol system could build three Daedalus-class ships for every NX-class ship constructed. During and after the war, ships of this class were upgraded with technology used for the NX program while a few of the survivors were used as testbeds for various Warp 6 and 7 engine configurations and components.
While serving the Federation, a number of these ships were lost. USS Essex (NCC-173) was lost with all hands while in the atmosphere of an M-Class moon orbiting Mab-Bu VI in 2167. A year later in 2168, USS Horizon (NCC-176) was lost following a visit to the Sigma Iotia star system. Following more than 35 years of service to the Federation, the Daedalus-class was retired in 2196.
