By 2344,
an Ambassador-class vessel beared the name. In that year, NCC-1701-C
received a distress signal from a Klingon outpost on the planet Narendra III. Enterprise-C is lost and
presumed destroyed defending the outpost from four Romulan Warbirds. However, the probability exists that during
the battle, Enterprise-C travelled 22 years into the future, causing an alternate timeline to form. In this
alternate time, the Federation is at war with the Klingon Empire. A war that the Federation is losing. Furthermore,
the chief of security of the Enterprise-D is Lt. Natasha Yar, who had died two years earlier in the original
timeline. While in the alternate timeline, Enterprise-C and -D are attacked by two Klingon Birds-of-Prey. This
attack leads to the death of the Enterprise-C's commander, Captain Rachel Garrett. The Ambassador-class
vessel eventually returns to her own time with her helmsman, Lt. Richard Castillo, in command. Just prior to the
1701-C's departure, the Captain Picard of the alternate timeline allows Lt. Yar to return with the Enterprise-C.
Upon returning to the original timeline at almost the exact instant the vessel left, the Enterprise-C is
destroyed, yet successfully defends the Klingon outpost. More than twenty years later, rumors suggest that there were
survivors from the Enterprise-C however, the information can't be confirmed.
One year
before the incident at Narendra III, Starfleet's Advanced Starship Design Bureau began the
Galaxy-Class Development Project. By 2357, the prototype vessel is
commissioned and launched as USS Galaxy, bearing the registry number NX-70637. On 04 October 2363 (Stardate 40759.5),
the fifth starship to bear the name Enterprise is launched from Utopia Plantia Yards registered as NCC-1701-D.
Between Stardates 41148 and 48650.1, Jean-Luc Picard, formerly of the
Constellation-class USS Stargazer, commanded the ship
through many missions and first encounters. During the ship's short, yet illustrious career, first contact was made
with the Q, the Ferengi, the Borg and many other species. Like the original Enterprise, the Enterprise-D
crossed the Romulan Neutral Zone on several occasions. After the tragic loss of 39 starships to the Borg at the
Battle of Wolf 359, Enterprise and her crew were able to prevent the assimilation of Earth in early 2367.
During the Klingon Civil War of 2367-8, the Enterprise and 24 other Federation starships stopped the continued
involvement of the Romulan Empire, which was supplying the Duras family and it's supporters. Between Stardates 46357.4
and 46360.8 in 2369, Enterprise-D was under the temporary command of Captain Edward Jellico, during armistice
negotiations with the Cardassians. In late 2369 and early 2370, the Enterprise and its crew encountered a renegade
group of Borg drones led by Lore, the brother of Lt. Commander Data; both being androids created by Dr. Noonien Soong
some thirty years earlier. Near the end of 2370, the entity known as Q visited Captain Picard and bounced him around
between three different time periods to see if humanity was capable of thought on a higher plain of existence.
During the promotion ceremony for ship's Klingon Tactical officer, Lt. Worf to Lt. Commander in 2371, the Enterprise receives a distress signal from the Amagosa observatory. Upon ths ship's arrival, an away team transported over and found only one survivor from what appeared to be a Romulan attack, leading to an investigation. During the investigation, the survivor, an El-Aurian scientist named Dr. Tolan Soran, requests permission to return to the station, which Captian Picard denied. Despite not having permission, he returns to the station, interrupting Data and Lt. Commander Geordi LaForge, the ship's chief engineer. He assaults LaForge and threatens Data, who is hampered by his recently-installed emotion chip which just moments earlier fused to his neural net. Soran launches a solar probe from the station toward the Amagosa star and upon impact, causes all nuclear fusion to break down in the star and generates a Level 12 shockwave. As the shockwave produced by the star's destruction closes in on the observatory and the Enterprise, the ship's executive officer, Commander Will Riker and Lt. Commander Worf attempt to rescue their crewmates, but Soran and LaForge are beamed off the observatory by a Klingon Bird-of-Prey under the command of the Duras sisters, Lursa and B'Etor, who have an “alliance” with Soran. Data is recovered and the Enterprise escapes destruction from the shockwave. Upon further investigation it is discovered that Soran had been rescued along with 46 other refugees by the Enterprise-B in 2293. That rescue mission occurred during the ship's maiden voyage, leading to the death of retired Starfleet Captain James T. Kirk. Since the rescue, Soran had become obsessed with returning to the energy ribbon known to those refugees as the Nexus. It is also learned that a current member of the Enterprise-D's crew, the mysterious Guinan, hostess of the ship's “Ten-Forward” lounge was amongst those refugees rescued by the Enterprise-B in 2293. While discussing the situation and her personal experience, Guinan revels that the energy ribbon encountered by the Enterprise-B in 2293 is called “The Nexus” by her people. Furthermore, she states that the Nexus is “like being inside pure joy” and warns Picard that if he goes in he may never want to come out. As the investigation continues, Data and Picard discover that in order for Soran to enter the Nexus, the Veridian star would have to be destroyed, resulting in the deaths of the 230 million inhabitants of Veridian IV.
Picard orders the Enterprise to the Veridian system in an attempt to stop Soran from implementing his plan. Upon arrival the Enterprise is contacted by the Duras sisters and a prisoner exchange is established; in return for LaForge, Captain Picard is allowed to beam down to the surface to confront Soran. Prior to the exchange however, Soran uses his knowledge and talent to tap into LaForge's visual prosthetic, known as the VISOR, allowing the Duras sisters to see what LaForge sees without his or anyone else's knowledge. This advantage allows the Duras sisters to learn the Enterprise's shield frequency and alter their weapons' frequency to match. They attack and cause heavy damage to Enterprise before the ship's crew can respond. Once the Enterprise does respond however, the response is swift and catastrophic; resulting in the destruction of the Duras' Bird-of-Prey and the deaths of the sisters and their crew. Unfortunately the victory is short lived. An explosion in Engineering leads to the evacuation of the engineering (battle) section of the ship and the separation of the saucer module from the battle section. Moments after seperation the ship's warp core breaches, destroying the battle section. A subspace shockwave created by the core breach slams into the saucer, causing it barrel into Veridian III's atmosphere nearly out of control and then crash on the surface.
While the Enterprise's crew fights for their lives in space; eventually crash-landing on the surface, Captain Picard is intially unsuccessful in stopping Soran on the surface of Veridian III; resulting in the destruction of the entire star system including the deaths of 230 million inhabitants of Veridian IV and the crew of the Enterprise. However, Picard finds himself in the Nexus, eventually realizes were he is and attempts to get help, initially from an afterimage of Guinan and then James T. Kirk, who had been in the Nexus since the rescue mission in 2293, occurring 78 years earlier but for him it only occurred a few minutes ago. Upon leaving the Nexus, Picard and Kirk succesfully prevent Soran from destroying the Veridian System when he is killed as his solar probe is destroyed on the launch pad. Sadly, Kirk loses his life saving millions of others; saying, “It was fun”. Picard buries Kirk in a simple grave, marking it with Kirk's Starfleet insignia. He is picked up by a shuttlecraft and taken to the crashsite. Picard records his final “Captain's Log” aboard the Enterprise on Stardate 48650.1; stating that three Federation ships, led by the Nebula-class USS Farragut, were rescuing the crew, causalties were light amongst the crew but the ship could not be salvaged.
One year
after the events in the Veridian system, Starfleet commissions a new Sovereign-class
starship as the sixth vessel to bear the name Enterprise on Stardate 49827.5. Commanded by Captain Jean-Luc
Picard, the new vessel bears the registry number NCC-1701-E. Less than a year later in 2373 the Borg attempt a second
invasion of Federation Space. As during the first invasion, the Borg enter Earth's solar system before the Enterprise
could arrive, which had been ordered to patrol the Romulan Neutral Zone. Captain Picard takes command of the fleet
battling the Borg vessel during this second attempt to assimilate Earth. The Borg vessel is destroyed but not before
launching a new ship in the shape of a sphere. This sphere creates a temporal vortex to travel back in time. The
Enterprise pursues the ship into the past. Upon the ship's arrival, the Borg vessel is firing weapons at Earth's
surface. Enterprise responds to the attack by firing it's quantum torpedoes, destroying the sphere. After determining
the location that the Borg were firing on, the crew discover that they were in the mid-21st Century with
the date being April 4 2063; one day before Earth's first official contact with an alien race. April 5, 2063 also
marks Earth's first faster-than-light space flight, made by scientist Dr. Zefram Cochrane. Prior to the Borg sphere's
destruction, the Borg transported to the Enterprise in their continued attempt to prevent First Contact. Their
mission would be stopped by the Enterprise crew on Earth, in space and onboard the ship. Dr. Cochrane's warp
ship, the Phoenix, would make it's short voyage in subspace and history continues uninterrupted. The Enterprise
returned to the 24th Century.
Two years later the ship is on a diplomatic mission when it receives a communication from Admiral Dougherty of Starfleet. Dougherty was assigned as a liaison between the Federation and the Son'a in studying a race known as the Ba'ku. Dougherty's message to Enterprise indicated that Lt. Commander Data was malfunctioning and he required Data's schematics. Captain Picard found this unusual and decided to head to the Ba'ku planet in the Briar Patch. After the ship's arrival and the recovery of Data, the crew discovered that there was a conspiracy to move the Ba'ku civilization off the planet so that the Son'a could collect the metaphasic particles in the planet's rings. Unfortunately, the procedure would destroy the planet's ecosystem, making the planet uninhabitable for generations. Picard made the decision that he alone would help the Ba'ku, fortunately his loyal crew disobeyed his orders and assisted their captain and the Ba'ku. While most of the senior officers were on the planet's surface, the Enterprise, under the command of Commander Riker, proceeded out of the Briar Patch to make contact with the Federation Council, to "put a face on the Ba'ku". Before they could get clear of the Briar Patch, Enterprise was intercepted by Son'a ships and attacked. Enterprise and her crew were victorious but at the cost of the ship's warp core, which was used to seal a subspace tear created by subspace weapons fired by the Son'a. Captain Picard and his officers on the surface were mostly successful in preventing the capture of the Ba'ku, despite his capture. Captain Picard was personally responsible for the destruction of the particle collector by activating the collector's self-destruct system. The Ba'ku were returned to their planet.
In 2379, USS Enterprise detects a positronic signature in the Kolarun system, while in route
to Betazed for the Betazoid wedding of Commander Riker and Counselor Troi. The ship alters course for Kolarus III located
near the Romulan Neutral Zone. It's discovered that there is an disassembled Soong-type android on the surface, and an
away team, led by Captain Picard, recovers it. While reassembling and activating the android known as B-4, Enterprise
is ordered to Romulus on a diplomatic mission to discuss peace with the new leader of the Romulan Star Empire. The ship
arrives at Romulus on Stardate 56844.9 and waits 17 hours before they are contacted. A huge vessel decloaks and hails
Enterprise. The ship is identified by the Reman Viceroy as the Scimitar and an away team beams over and meets
the new Praetor, named Shinzon.
It's determined that Shinzon is Picard's clone and was intended to be a Romulan spy within the Federation
but, the plan was aborted. Shinzon was sent to Remus, the sister planet of Romulus, to live and work in the dilithium mines.
Eventually, he became the Reman's leader, developed an alliance with members of the Romulan military convincing them that
he would destroy Earth; allowing for an invasion of a crippled Federation. His allies implemented a coup he devised in order
to become Preator, or leader, of the Empire.
After the initial encounter, Picard is captured and B-4 downloads data from the ship's computers, which
is discovered by the ship's crew. B-4 is deactivated and Data transports over to the Reman ship acting like B-4; assisting
Captain Picard in his escape. Upon Picard and Data's return, Enterprise swiftly departs for Federation space. With
Shinzon in command, the Scimitar pursues and attacks Enterprise under cloak, forcing Enterprise out
of warp; beginning the Battle of Bassen Rift. Enterprise attempts a counterattack but is unsuccessful however, receives
help from two Romulan vessels.
As the battle progresses, one of the Romulan ships is destroyed, the other is heavily damaged and
Enterprise loses its shields. After the shields fall, Remans board Enterprise however, Riker, Lt. Commander
Worf and several security personnel contain the boarding party. With shields down, Enterprise's hull is heavily damaged,
including the bridge, resulting in the death of at least one bridge crewmember. As Enterprise and Scimitar
“face” each other Picard orders Troi to set a collision course into the Scimitar at full impulse. Scimitar
attempts to move out of the way, but Enterprise collides with the ship. Shinzon orders full reverse and the two ships
separate. With both ships disabled, Shinzon activates his ship's Thalaron radiation generator to destroy Enterprise.
Hoping the Enterprise's destruction would destroy the Scimitar, Picard attempts to activate the ship's auto-destruct
but, the system is damaged and can't be activated. Picard then grabs a phaser rifle and beams over to the Scimitar.
Without transporters. Data leaves the Enterprise through the torn hull and boards the Scimitar from space.
Aboard the Scimitar, Picard eliminates much of the remaining crew and ends up in hand-to-hand combat
with Shinzon on the Scimitar's bridge. Shinzon is killed but Picard is pinned between a bulkhead and Shinzon's dead body.
Data arrives and frees Picard, slapping on an emergency transport beacon beaming Picard back to the Enterprise. Data fires
his phaser at the Thalaron generator, destroying the generator, the Scimitar, and sacrificing himself to save his friends
and Earth. Enterprise returns to Earth for repairs. While in an orbital repair dock, Picard and his senior staff mourn the
loss of Data with a toast of Chateau Picard wine. Later, Riker is officially promoted to Captain. He and Counselor Troi depart
Enterprise for their new starship home, USS Titan.
