Applying the same new technologies and innovations used for refitting the Constitution Class, Starfleet designed and built Miranda Class starships in the 2270's and 2280's as the fleet's medium cruisers, which served in that capacity for over 100 years. Miranda Class ships were designed to perform a variety of missions from scientific explorations to sector patrolling. Throughout the class's years of service, it received numerous technological upgrades along with two variants being built. The Federation-Dominion War of 2373-2375 was not kind to the Miranda Class cruisers. A large number of these ships, including Sitak and Majestic, were lost during that long, bloody conflict. The fate of the Miranda Class has not been decided by Starfleet, but due to age and the number of ships lost during the war, Starfleet will probable retire the class from service after a long and exceptional career.

NOTE:  The true origins of the Miranda Class are unknown. It is probable that the class served along side the pre-refit Constitution class ships and then refitted. It is also probable that the class was developed and built as it looked in 2285 (Star Trek II) before the Consititution class refit began in 2269 (about a year and a half before the events of Star Trek I).
